What's a PARSEC?

 

PARSEC: pär•sek
As a unit of measurement used for interstellar distance, one parsec is the distance to a star that shows a parallax, or apparent shift in position, of one second of arc when viewed from opposite sides of the earth's orbit. The word parsec is an abbreviation of the words “parallax of one arcsecond. The distance is approximately 31 trillion kilometres or 19 trillion miles, roughly 3.26 light-years.
