Multi-Platform Integration

In today's environment, nearly every computing center is made up of multiple operating systems running on hardware from multiple vendors. This allows companies to take advantage of the best features of each environment. This also means that there can be more issues trying to maintain those environments and make them work together.

PARSEC Group can help you in the integration of OpenVMS, HP-UX, AIX, Solaris, Tru64 UNIX, Linux and Microsoft Windows. By doing this, you may simplify user maintenance, increase application compatbility, gain efficiency in storage, and require fewer printers.

File Sharing

FTP allows easy file sharing across platforms without any requirement that they be on the same network. PARSEC Group can configure your systems as an FTP server to make your data available to remote systems and secure the data on that server. PARSEC Group can also configure scripts to automate the dropping off, or retrieving of the data from an FTP client.

The Network File System (NFS) is available on most operating systems. This uses TCP/IP to communicate between the systems to provide access to files that are on remote systems as though they reside on the local system. PARSEC Group can configure the NFS server and client, RPC and user mapping on your systems to share files with with other systems, whether they are running the same, or a different, operating system. This way, users and applications may access the remote files without having to use FTP to copy from a remote host, do their work, and FTP them back to the remote system. This decreases storage requirements and increases the users productivity.

The Common Internet File System (CIFS) provides systems the ability to work in cooperation with Microsoft Windows using the SMB protocol. Samba is an open source application that implements the SMB protocol on many UNIX and Linux systems. HP's implementation of CIFS for OpenVMS is based on Samba. We can install, update and configure Samba/CIFS on your systems. With this, your non-Microsoft Windows systems can provide their data to Microsoft Windows systems, or other systems running the Samba/CIFS software.

Authentication

Many Linux, UNIX, OpenVMS and Microsoft Windows systems support logins being authenticated by Kerberos, LDAP or Active Directory. With this, your users have a single password to remember for the environment. When it is time to change their password, it only needs to be changed once for the domain. With only one password to remember, users are less likely to forget their password; or worse, write it down. This can simplify the day-to-day management of user accounts while freeing up time for the system administrators to handle other tasks.

Printer Sharing

Multiple systems, even those running different operating systems, may share the same printers. Different protocols may be supported by different printers or servers. These include Telnet, LAT, LPD, raw TCP, and SMB. PARSEC Group can configure your printers for maximum utilization by all systems with access to those printers.

Networking

TCP/IP is the most popular networking protocol in use on most systems today. DECnet is the second most popular network in use and is is available for use on OpenVMS, Tru64 UNIX, multiple Linux platforms and Microsoft Windows. Let us help you complete your integration of OpenVMS in your network by installing and configuring DECnet on those systems needing to manage files and provide access to DECnet objects.
